SA AIA Launches 4x4 and Overlanding Chapter to Elevate Professional Standards in the Adventure IndustryÂ
Thursday, 26 September 2024 – The South African Adventure Industry Association (SA AIA) is proud to announce the official launch of our 4x4 & Overlanding Chapter, the first in a series of dedicated chapters aimed at addressing the unique needs within South Africa’s vibrant adventure tourism industry.
As the first chapter of its kind under SA AIA, the 4x4 & Overlanding Chapter focuses specifically on professionals and businesses involved in 4x4 and off-road adventure activities. However, this is just the beginning – as we continue to grow, more chapters will be established to serve the needs of various sectors we represent, from school camps and corporate team building, to the broader adventure guiding industry.
We are also excited to announce that Johan du Plooy, a highly experienced 4x4 Adventure Guide, has been appointed as the Acting Chairperson of the chapter. Johan is a key figure in the 4x4 industry, and his extensive knowledge and experience have earned him a seat on SA AIA’s National Executive Committee (NEC), where he represents the interests of the 4x4 & Overlanding sector.
A Chapter for the 4x4 & Overlanding Community
The 4x4 & Overlanding Chapter is designed to cater to the unique challenges, opportunities, and professional standards within the off-road and overlanding sectors. Our objectives include:
Advocating for the development and re-alignment of accredited training programmes to replace expired unit standards in 4x4 skills.
Upholding professional and safety standards across the sector, ensuring that all guides and operators meet the necessary requirements.
Facilitating workshops, events, and networking opportunities for members and non-members alike to promote continued professional development (CPD).
Engaging with key stakeholders to define the necessary competencies and safety standards for professionals using 4x4 vehicles in their work.
Corporate Governance and Professional Standards
As part of our commitment to transparency and corporate governance, the 4x4 & Overlanding Chapter operates autonomously but remains accountable to SA AIA’s broader mission. This chapter, like those that will follow, is governed by a chapter-specific Chairperson (Johan du Plooy), who also holds a seat on our National Executive Committee (NEC) to ensure alignment with SA AIA’s values and objectives.
A Call to Action for Industry Stakeholders
We encourage all professionals working within the 4x4 and overlanding sector – from adventure guides and training providers to operators and service providers – to join this chapter. Help us shape the future of the industry by sharing your knowledge and working with us to uphold professional and safety standards that benefit everyone.
